What is a Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra (also called birth star or lunar mansion) is one of 27 divisions of the ecliptic — the apparent path of the Sun as seen from Earth — each spanning 13°20′. The Moon moves through all 27 Nakshatras in approximately 27.3 days (one sidereal month).

The Nakshatra the Moon is in at the time of birth is called the Janma Nakshatra (birth star). It is one of the most important factors in Hindu astrology — used for naming newborns, selecting auspicious dates (muhurtham), and determining compatibility in marriage (nakshatra porutham).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Janma Nakshatra and daily Nakshatra?
Your Janma Nakshatra is the Nakshatra the Moon was in at the time of your birth — it is fixed for life. The daily Nakshatra (shown by this calculator) is the Nakshatra the Moon is currently transiting. When the daily Nakshatra matches your 8th Nakshatra from your Janma Nakshatra, it is called Chandrashtamam.
How many Padas does each Nakshatra have?
Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 Padas (quarters), each spanning 3°20′. The 4 Padas of all 27 Nakshatras give 108 Pada divisions — which is the basis of the Navamsha chart in Vedic astrology.
Which Nakshatra is considered best for new activities?
The most auspicious Nakshatras for new ventures include: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishtha, and Revati. Moola, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Vishakha 4th Pada, and Magha are generally avoided for muhurtham.
