✨ Abhijit Muhurta — Today's Most Auspicious Window

Abhijit Muhurta: 01:09 PM – 01:40 PM

Abhijit Muhurta is the first half of the 8th daytime Hora — the midpoint of the solar day. It falls approximately around midday, midway between sunrise and sunset. In Vedic tradition it is considered the most universally auspicious Muhurta of the day, requiring no additional checking of Tithi, Nakshatra, or weekday. Ancient texts describe it as a time when the Sun is at its strongest, neutralising inauspicious factors.

Note: Abhijit Muhurta is generally not observed on Wednesdays in many traditions, as it conflicts with Abhijit Nakshatra on that day. Consult a Pandit for ceremony-level decisions.

What is Hora?

Hora (ஹோரை, also spelled Hora or Hora Kalam) is one of the oldest auspicious-timing tools in Indian astrology. Each solar day is divided into 24 equal planetary hours — 12 during daytime (sunrise to sunset) and 12 at night (sunset to next sunrise). Every Hora is ruled by one of the seven classical planets in the Chaldean sequence: Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars.

The first Hora of each day is ruled by the planet associated with that weekday — the Sun rules the first Hora on Sunday, the Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday, and Saturn on Saturday. This is also why English weekday names derive from the same planetary rulers (Sun-day, Moon-day, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most auspicious Hora for starting a business?
Jupiter Hora is considered the best for starting a new business, signing agreements, or launching ventures — Jupiter represents expansion, wealth, and wisdom. Sun Hora is also excellent for matters of authority and leadership. Mercury Hora is ideal specifically for trade, communication, and financial dealings.
How many Horas are in a day?
There are 24 Horas in each solar day — 12 during the daytime (from sunrise to sunset) and 12 during the night (from sunset to the next sunrise). The day and night Horas are not equal in clock minutes — daytime Horas are longer in summer and shorter in winter, mirroring the changing day length.
Which Hora should be avoided for new activities?
Saturn Hora and Mars Hora are generally considered less favourable for starting new auspicious ventures. Saturn is associated with delays and obstacles; Mars with conflict and haste. However, for activities requiring courage, physical effort, or military/surgical action, Mars Hora can be appropriate.
Is Hora the same as Rahu Kalam?
No — Hora and Rahu Kalam are separate Panchang elements. Hora divides the entire day into 24 planetary hours, each with its own ruling planet and quality. Rahu Kalam is a specific 90-minute inauspicious window within the daytime, calculated differently (one-eighth of the day, based on weekday). Both are used together for auspicious timing — avoid starting new activities during Rahu Kalam and prefer Jupiter/Venus/Sun Hora for important starts.
Can I use Hora for Muhurtham selection?
Yes — Hora is one of the factors considered in Muhurtham (auspicious time) selection. A traditional Muhurtham combines favourable Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, Vara, and Hora. Selecting a Jupiter or Venus Hora that also falls outside Rahu Kalam, during an auspicious Nakshatra and Tithi, gives the strongest overall Muhurtham.
What is Abhijit Muhurta?
Abhijit Muhurta is the first half of the 8th daytime Hora — approximately the midpoint of the solar day, falling close to midday. It is considered the most universally auspicious Muhurta in Vedic tradition. The Sun is at its zenith during this window, which Vedic texts say neutralises inauspicious Tithi, Nakshatra, and weekday factors. It is therefore recommended for important new beginnings, travel, and ceremonies when a complete Muhurtham is not practical. By convention it is generally not observed on Wednesdays, as that day's Abhijit Nakshatra creates a conflict in traditional reckoning. Read the full guide →
