What is a Karana?
A Karana is half of a Tithi — the period in which the Moon moves 6° relative to the Sun. Since there are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, there are 60 Karanas. Each Tithi has two Karanas — one in the first half and one in the second half.
7 Movable (Chara) Karanas
| Bava | Ruled by Sun — auspicious for all work |
| Balava | Ruled by Moon — auspicious, gentle |
| Kaulava | Ruled by Mars — good for agricultural work |
| Taitila | Ruled by Mercury — good for creative work |
| Garija | Ruled by Jupiter — auspicious for ceremonies |
| Vanija | Ruled by Venus — good for commerce |
| Vishti (Bhadra) | Ruled by Saturn — generally inauspicious |
The 4 fixed Karanas (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) occur only once in a lunar month at specific positions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Vishti Karana (Bhadra)?
Vishti (also called Bhadra) is the only Karana considered generally inauspicious. It is ruled by Saturn and is associated with obstacles and delays. Starting any auspicious activity or ceremony during Vishti Karana is traditionally avoided. The specific times of Vishti Karana vary each month.
How is Karana used in muhurtham selection?
When selecting an auspicious muhurtham for ceremonies like weddings, the Karana at the muhurtham time is checked to ensure it is not Vishti (Bhadra). The other six movable Karanas are all considered favourable for ceremonies.
