About Deepavali

Deepavali is the South Indian celebration of the Festival of Lights. In Tamil tradition, it falls on Naraka Chaturdashi — one day before the North Indian Diwali — marking Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura.

Significance

The Tamil Deepavali tradition begins before dawn: families take an oil bath (gingelly oil), wear new clothes, light crackers at dawn, and celebrate with sweets. The lighting of lamps symbolises the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

How the Date is Determined

In Tamil tradition, Deepavali is celebrated on Naraka Chaturdashi — the 14th Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Tamil month of Aippasi (October–November).
